Bulges, ruptures and leaks, oh my!

Hoses and fluid lines are critical to the safe operation of your vehicle. A ruptured line or hose can leave you stranded, damage your car, as well as cause failure of a vital component of your vehicle.

Check the coolant hoses under your hood every month or two to avoid the hassle and potential danger of a broken hose while you’re on the road. With the car cool and off, squeeze the hoses. If they are hard, make a crunching sound, are soft or sticky, have them replaced. With the car warm but off, examine hoses for bulges and collapsed sections. If you find even a seam, it’s time for replacement.

Automatic transmissions use red or pink fluid, and lots of it. Very often, the first sign of an automatic transmission leaking is that the transmission will start to slip (the car will rev without going into gear). If the leak continues, eventually the car will not move at all. Get any transmission leak fixed right away.

Brake lines are difficult to inspect at home so have Scottie & Son inspect them and replace any that are cracked, bent or corroded. There is not much worse that can happen on the road than to press your brake pedal and find that you can’t stop!
